Contract Scope

During Operations VNL will be conducting a broad program of monitoring, much of which will focus on water quality. These programs will address issues related to adherence to Vale NL HSE Policy and Procedures, meeting regulatory requirements under various Permits and approvals, as well as implementation of EEM commitments.

Monitoring targets selected for environmental effects monitoring in freshwater in 2020 are as follows:

  • Water Quality and Quantity;

  • Sediment Quality; and

  • Fish

    Monitoring targets selected for environmental effects monitoring in freshwater in 2021 are as follows:

  • Water Quality and Quantity; and

  • Benthic macro invertebrate community

    Monitoring targets selected for environmental effects monitoring in freshwater in 2022 are as follows:

  • Water Quality and Quantity;

  • Fish

Water quality is an important monitoring target. A selection of parameters will be addressed as EEM subjects; others will be monitored at a surveillance level. Benthic macro invertebrate communities are selected as a monitoring target because they are directly exposed to water-borne and particulate-borne contaminants, are ecologically important organisms (i.e., a major food source for fish) and provide multiple sensitive assessment endpoints. Fish are selected because they are also exposed to contaminants and are of importance to aboriginal communities as a source of food.

Each program element is described in a separate section, with the description addressing the level of monitoring to apply to the affected parameters. A summary of the EEM program schedule for 2020-2022 is provided in Table 1.
